🐻 Behind the Scenes: Painting The Bear Mural in Bruin, PA
When Melissa Pennington first reached out about painting a mural for Bruin Bowling Lanes, she had one request: “Can you bring our mascot—the bear—to life?” I was immediately intrigued. A bear mural? On the front of a bowling alley? Yes, please.
Melissa and her husband Jonathan, along with his parents (also co-owners), commissioned the project. They wanted something bold, colorful, and unmistakably Bruin. And I was ready to deliver.
🎨 From Concept to Color Explosion
We knew the mural needed to pop. It had to include the tools of the game—bowling pins and a bowling ball—and it had to feel alive. I’d just started experimenting with Adobe Firefly, their AI image generator, and ran a few prompts to get the creative juices flowing.
Three images stood out. One had a wild “color blast” background. Another had the perfect bear body. And the third had a face that felt just right. I Frankensteined them together in Photoshop, creating a composite that felt powerful and playful. Then I mocked it up on a photo of the building’s front to show how it would look in real life.
Melissa and Jonathan’s reaction? “YES!!! Love it!!! Let’s do it!!” That kind of energy is contagious.
🖌️ Painting After Dark (and in the Heat)
The digital prep took about two hours. Drawing the bear on the building took four more—after dark, from 9pm to 1am, using a movie projector to cast the image onto the wall. (Back in the day, I used an old-school overhead projector and transparencies. We’ve come a long way!)
I outlined the design with permanent Sharpies—black and colored—to guide the painting process. For paint, I used Rustoleum’s outdoor UV-resistant black and white, and Mural brand paints for the colors. Both are weatherproof and highly rated by other muralists.
Speaking of weather: August was HOT. Some days hit over 90°F. Thankfully, it was mostly dry, with only a couple rain delays. September mornings dipped into the 40s, which meant waiting until midday to paint so the temperature could rise above 50°F for proper curing. That was especially true while working on The Cub, the second mural.
💬 Community Love
One of the best parts of this project? The people. So many stopped by to chat, cheer me on, and share kind words. The new gray paint job, the bear murals, and the roof LED lights—together, they’ve completely transformed the building. A few folks even asked for my info, and now I’ve got three more murals lined up for next year!
And then came the Butler Eagle article. I didn’t expect it, but it was such an honor to have my work—and my journey—highlighted in print.
What It Meant to Me
This mural was more than just paint on a wall. It was a chance to connect with a community, to bring a building to life, and to tell a story through color and character. Watching people react, seeing their smiles, hearing their feedback—it reminded me why I do this.
Bruin was basically on “Bear Watch 2025.” Folks watched the mural evolve day by day on their commutes. That kind of engagement? It’s magic.
